MSUM Nursing Students Travel to Nicaragua 2013

For the past 14 years, Professor Jane Bergland has taken nursing students on a medical trip to Nicaragua for their final preceptorship course. They join a variety of 21 other health professionals thru the MEDICO organization. From February 8, 2013 to February 18, 2013,six RN to BSN students (Jill David, Heather Thingvold, Jennifer Kastle, Jackie Roers, Ronda Davis, Michelle Emanuele), along with one graduate student, traveled from Managua north to Jalapa, Nicaragua. Lisa Thielke, an MSUM graduate student in nursing, implemented her role as nurse educator though coordination, management, leadership, role modeling, and advising.

Care was focused on performing triage and intakes on children with disabilities and their families. They also provided health education in a variety of school settings along with wellness education to over 40 women at the women’s shelter. Professional dental care was provided this year and the students assisted the dentists and provided dental fluoride treatments to hundreds of children. Nursing students did an excellent job of adapting their care to be culturally sensitive in the developing country conditions of Nicaragua.
