Recycle Across America gives us these statistics:

  • Recycling one ton of plastic bottles saves the equivalent energy usage of a two person household for one year.
  • Recycling a single aluminum can saves enough energy to power a TV for three hours.
  • Americans throw away enough office paper each year to build a 12 foot high wall from Seattle to NY (a new wall every year).
  • More than 28 billion glass bottles and jars end up in landfills every year — that is the equivalent of filling up two Empire State Buildings every three weeks.
  • Recycling 1 ton of cardboard saves 46 gallons of oil.
  • Almost half of the food in the U.S. goes to waste – approximately 3,000 pounds per second.
  • In 2007, 82% equalling 1.8 million tons of ewaste (various electronics e.g. TVs, cell phones, computers etc) ended up in landfills.

We have all been encouraged to recycle and know how important and beneficial it is for our environment and health, but why doesn’t everybody participate. Sure, throwing everything into the trash can is easy, but recycling can become just as easy with practice!

Recycling is so important that it has a day dedicated just for it! November 15 is America Recycles Day. Although recycling is an everyday process, this day is great for putting motivation and inspiration into us. Recycling may require some research and practice, but it is so worth it. Find a recycling business near you that fits your needs. MinnKota Enviroservices, Inc. is a great one for the Fargo-Moorhead area! Their website has a fantastic list of acceptable and unacceptable items. MinnKota and the City of Fargo is coming together this year on November 15th to spread recycling awareness. They will be at Cashwise on 13th Ave. S in Fargo spreading awareness and giving away reusable bags.

For those on campus, take advantage of the recycling bins that are located all over campus! Take the extra minute to divide the waste from your meals into the designated bins. They are there for a reason.

MSUM Sustainability gives us some quick tips on how you can reduce waste:

The United States makes more waste than any other country. Let’s work together to change that!
