Learning to assess heart sounds using the stethoscope is challenging and proficiency requires years of practice. Is there an alternative? Ultrasound devices that allow the user to view structures in the heart and lungs are being considered as an alternative. The problem is that they currently cost thousands of dollars and also require training and practice. Interestingly enough, one area where the stethoscope outperforms the newer technology is the assessment of wheezes. The ultrasound can’t hear them and they aren’t visible!
